There are two types of people in this world: those who care for others, and those who don’t.
No one is inherently the latter.
Humans are gifted with the ability to vividly imagine anything they’d like – you can imagine eating a chocolate chip cookie as though it’s really happening. You can taste it and smell it. You cry when watching the Notebook (it’s OK guys, you can admit it too). This means we have the incredible gift of empathy. We don’t have to experience starvation first-hand to know how horrendous it must be.
How many times have you thought: “Oh, shut that news off, I don’t want to hear about the millions of children starving to death”? I have, too many times.
If you couldn’t feel their pain to some degree, it wouldn’t bother you. So don’t try to be something you’re not. Be real.
Be the authentic you.
The real you cares about others, and others care about you.
Your true nature is to want to help.
Don’t be “too cool” to fight against injustice. That’s not the cool thing to do, that’s the selfish and ugly thing to do.
As my professor once said, “There are 7 billion people in this world – 7 BILLION UNIQUE MINDS – how have we not come up with a solution to each and every global problem?”
